First FCI foodgrain freight train reaches Kashmir

Historic grain train links Punjab & Kashmir, eases winter supply strain

Srinagar, 22 Dec: For the first time, Kashmir received a direct rail delivery of essential food grains as a Food Corporation of India (FCI) freight train arrived safely at Anantnag Goods Terminal .

The historic train, carrying 1,384 tonnes of grains across 21 BCN wagons from Ajitwal in Punjab, marks a significant step in ensuring a reliable and faster food supply to the Valley, especially during harsh winter months when road transport often faces disruptions.

Officials said the rail service offers a safer and quicker alternative to National Highway 44, which frequently closes due to snowfall and landslides. The initiative is expected to benefit local traders and residents by ensuring timely delivery of grains and other essential commodities.

Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Uchit Singhal, described the freight train as an “economic bridge” linking Punjab and Kashmir. He said the rail service would reduce traffic congestion on NH-44, enhance supply chain efficiency, and improve planning and distribution of essential items across the region.

“The train arrived at approximately 11:30 am, marking the start of what is expected to become a regular service for bulk foodgrain delivery to Kashmir. This initiative is a major boost for the region’s food security and logistics infrastructure,” Singhal added.

Officials noted that the train reached the Valley without any disruptions, demonstrating the reliability of rail transport over road during winter. They said the service will play a crucial role in ensuring uninterrupted supply of grains and other essentials to the people of Kashmir.
